Traditionally, Ajrakh is the name of a resist hand block printing and natural dyeing technique on cloth. Traditional 'Ajrakh' involves around 16 stages of dyeing and resist printing using natural dyes and mordants. So the process means Aaj ke din rakh or keep it for today, till the colour fastens: unlike the hurried life of the modern world! The art is estimated to be around 4000 years old and it specially blossomed in India in the 16th century with the migration of the Khatri community from the Sindh province to the Kutch district. In the past forty years, ajrakh has not only been transformed from a rustic block print into a popular fashion fabric, it has also become the signature cloth of the Khatri communities of Kachchh and is their most successful product.
